Is It Really That Important To Exfoliate?

If you're not exfoliating, you may be missing out on a key step in your skincare routine.

It’s recommended to use an exfoliator 1 to 3 times per week depending on how gentle or abrasive your exfoliator is and what type of skin you have. If your skin is on the sensitive side, it’s good to keep it to 1 time a week, using a gentle exfoliator. If your skin tends to be quite congested and doesn't get easily irritated, you may want to exfoliate 3 times a week with a gentle or slightly more abrasive exfoliator.

While it’s wonderful to focus on increasing cell-turnover, you must realize that those dead skin cells also need help to be removed from the skin. If they are not exfoliated away, they can stay on the top layer of your skin, accentuating fine lines and wrinkles and even clogging your pores, causing breakouts. By using a gentle exfoliator, you are assisting to remove those dead skin cells and helping to give your skin a smoother, younger and clearer appearance.

While exfoliating is a key step in your skin care regimen, it’s crucial to not go over board. Over-exfoliation can actually cause inflammation and even chronic skin irritation. While it’s important to incorporate exfoliation into your routine, you must keep in mind that the top layer of the epidermis plays an important protective role and it must be kept in tact. This is why it's best to be as gentle as possible. Your skin should feel smooth and refreshed after exfoliating and not irritated and sore.

Try to incorporate light exfoliation into your routine 1 to 3 times a week and see how it can benefit your skin. You may be pleasantly surprised, and you may even notice that your makeup applies more easily and looks more flawless as well!
